Default Blood Parrots

All I have to offer is my personal experience. This is an invaluable
tool when relating to others with respect. Once someone starts
"shoulding" on me they get my back.

But then we all have those little obligations that we must adhere to
related to our family and up bringing, "Pauley, don't show your azz ..
don't tell on yourself .. don't say nut'in .. and don't forget the
disrespect showed to your family/wife .. couple days later everybody
forgets .. booda bing booda boom, slap the co@#%#@er in the mouth with a
Louisville Slugger ~ shrug ~ what can I say it's tradition.

When relating to my personal experience I know there is honesty and
integrity to back my words. I am not just spewing another's bullsh%t
that I have swallowed.

I can examine it "before" I swallow it.

I can go into petsmart and laugh out loud at the little Parrots Fish
playing.

Then ask myself why I feel sad when I look in the next tank at the
little Oscars, BRED to a large number, stuff into these little tanks,
most bound for cramped miserable lives, catching a hole in the head
disease from their owners.

Then the grotesque goldfish, BRED to where after they reach a certain
size they can no longer swim and just lay on the bottom of the tank
struggling, into a very long and slow death. (My friend who owns the LFS
here was babysitting one for some folks who had left town for the summer
when it reached this state. It took her a few days before she finally
made the decision to put someone else's fish out of it's misery. I
couldn't take it and just stayed completely out of her store
altogether.)

Then there are some elderly guppys with broken backs from being BRED to
have such large tails.....etc..etc..etc,,

When I leave petsmart to go home to play tag with a big healthy 9 inch 4
year old Blood Parrot which leaves the water chasing my hand, splashing
water in my face .. I have no need to bring dog biscuits home to pay
Scobby Doo to find out who BRED and spread the Franken Fish BULL****!!!!
about this HIGHbred they can't breed to stock up the Walmarts.

Oh my, I'm sorry. That's me! Just being silly again.. Now who am I
suppose to check with, you know about being so stupid and undisciplined.
I sure would hate to fall in love with the wrong fish again...

I feel better .. I'm going to go put this baseball bat back in the trunk
of the car ..

Thanks Dustin... This is what I am talking about. I only came to this
group for help because it is a group of cichlid enthusiats. I
expected the 'pros' here to be able to help me.

Some tried to by giving me links. Which I greatly appreciated, even
though I had already found those sites. I was actually hoping to find
someone like YOU that has a few of these guys and can tell me how to
give them a chance to live out the lives that they were forced to
live. It is good to hear that they can live four years and hopefully
more!

They seem such a peaceful trio... except feeding time, when they seem
to take as much food as they can get as fast as they can get it! They
have not been abusing any of the other fish in the tank that I had to
put them into (pair of gouramis, 8 tiger barbs, 4 ottos and four
Corys. They seem to acclimated well to the water conditions, but I am
doing extra 25% water changes every other day just to make sure there
are no other problems. I tend to have slightly high nitrAte levels
due to well water and probably a little too much food, but the amonia
and nitrite are always zero. My well is giving me about 20 on the
nitrAte scale, but my tanks tend to run around 80. Not quite enough
plants in the tanks yet since I just installed some DIY hoods to
improve the lighting enough to give the plants a better chance.

Anyway Dustin, thanks again. If you have any tips on the 'Bloody
Parrots' I could use them. Especially on any special food
requirements. From what I have been able to find after exhaustive
searching on Google and Yahoo, these guys are omnivours and need
basically normal fish foods. They are currently getting Tetramin Pro
flakes twice daily with a 'snack' of frozen mysis shrimp about every 4
days or so. Hopefully they will do well with that sort of mix.

Do they enjoy 'greens' as well? Like lettuce and/or zuccini?

My Parrots love, and I mean LOVE!, blood worms.. they tear into them like
they've never been fed before. They like brine shrimp to a point but they'll
ignore that for the worms. I haven't thrown in any zuccini so don't know if
they'd like it, but they do like algae wafers. I'd throw some in for my
(now) dearly departed pleco and the rainbow shark but the parrots would
hoard them (so I imagine they'd like all veggies). Hope this helps a bit..

All this talk about Parrot Cichlids is making me want to go out and buy
some.

Is the color permanent on the colored fish?

I've never seen the colored fish in the stores around here. Maybe
California banned them for all I know. They ban anything fun in this state.

If you get Bubblegum or Jellybean Parrots they are dyed and eventually (I've
been told) the color does fade. There are also regular Parrots and Purple
parrots that are not dyed. http://geocities.com/parrotcichlid/general.html
This page has a color run down towards the bottom.

Default Blood Parrots

I have six Parrots and one Jack Dempsey in a 75 gallon tank. The Parrots
stop eating feeder fish, but they still love the live ghost shrimp.
Couple times a year I get night crawlers for the Oscars and red worms
for the Parrots.

You will find that they are very HARDY fish and will eat everything
offered. Best answer when it comes to Parrots and water is ~ Yes, highly
recommended! After that....

I also have Plecos, Loaches, Corys, Gobies, Puffers. Crayfish, Apple
Snails, Guppies and frogs. Hands down, After pizza delivery, Bloodworms
are what is most consumed at my house. Even the Apple Snails love them.
But as you can see I have various dietary needs to consider. San
Francisco Bay Brand / Emerald Entree is the staple food offered, then
Omega One Veggie Rounds.

I am able to get live brine shrimp also. Yes, I'm guilty of feeding my
fish fast food! ..... I think you may have caught the value of
the adult feeder guppies from an earlier post. The Parrots didn't eat
the adults, but there were never any babies. For long anyway. I have
adult guppies in one of the Puffer / Goby tanks. Again, no babies, just
phat fish. ...paul...
