I picked up some electric blue dempseys at Big Al's (Mississauga) recently
and wuz wondering if there wuz some info on these guys on the net. I've done some searches on them but I've seen nothing so far that describes these fish. BAsically mine are half an inch each...a bight light blue with dark spots. Fantastic looking fish (and expensive too at 3 for $60 cdn). Does anyone out there have experience with these fish?? I've been told they are related to the jack depmsey cichlid but they are a more mellow variety (wuz told it wuz safe at this size to put into my planted tank with my many cardinal tetras). How fast do these suckers grow?? Willl they maintain their color?? Will I need to separate them from my cardinal tetras eventually?? Any websites with more info on them?? Any help would be appreciated. Dave |

How fast do these suckers grow??
Up to an inch a month initially if well fed & plenty of good water. Willl they maintain their color?? Yes - it should get even better Will I need to separate them from my cardinal tetras eventually?? Yes - they may kill any fish smaller than themselves, they may try to kill fish bigger than themselves as they mature. Any websites with more info on them?? Just google jack dempsey cichlid - these are either a colour selected variety or a subspecies. There is no such thing as a "mellow" JD. Any help would be appreciated. Find a new LFS..... |

Well, from some breeding reports I have heard, these are mellow in context with other JDs. That meaning the electric blue fry are prone to bullying by their normal JD siblings, often to the point of death. This could be related to the perceived fragile nature of this color variety, and certainly it would not be uncommon for a mutation to affect the vigor of an animal. But being mellow in relation to other JDs of similar size does not mean they are community fish. They are still cichlids after all, and cardinal tetras will be viewed as tasty tetra treats as soon as the JDs can fit the tetras into their mouths. |

So if they don't have their normal JD siblings to bully them....they in turn aren't as aggressive as normal JDs. But being mellow in relation to other JDs of similar size does not mean they are community fish. They are still cichlids after all, and cardinal tetras will be viewed as tasty tetra treats as soon as the JDs can fit the tetras into their mouths. That's what I wuz kinda figuring. I plan to separate them as they get bigger (or if my tetras suddenly start disappearing). Thankyou for your help Dave |
