Well, I would say your liner leaks. The water has to get past the liner to
get to the staves right? Is the liner up above the level of the water?

Default Barrel Pond help

Look at all the folds in the liner material. The liner may look like it is
over the top, but in trying to get a square flat liner to fit a round hole,
it has to have folds. I have found that where I created folds in my ponds,
that sometimes one of the folds ends up below water level and the water
leaks down.

Hi, we are setting up a barrel pond on our porch and could use a little

advice.
In our last house we had a small inground pond that we experimented with,

so
we know a little about how to take care of it. However, where we are

having
trouble seems to be the liner.
The half-whiskey barrel we bought was quite a bit bigger than the hard

plastic
liners so we decided to go with a plastic liner. We couldn't find a 5 x 5
liner pre-cut so we're trying black extra heavy duty plastic sheeting (its

6
ml). After getting the pond up and running late last night we discovered

this
morning that it seems to be leaking through some of the staves. I really
didn't think we had a hole in our liner so we're not sure where the water

is
coming from.
After reading all of the barrel info on the net that I could find it seems

to
me that our mistake was not to soak the barrel beforehand.
Does this sound right? Should we drain the pond and soak the barrel? Or

is
the liner we bought not going to hold water? We do have 3 goldfish to add

once
we solve the leak. Plus we have a small pump, filter, gravel and lily in

the
pond now.
Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Nicole

Well for starters I wouldn't go with a 6 mil liner, but if it doesn't leak,
fine, except you seem to have a leak. Either the liner leaks and if so go
but a 5 foot section of 10 foot liner at Home Depot or wherever. But, if you
are reasonably sure the liner doesn't leak, then check any folds you made
fitting the plastic to the barrel. Perhaps one of the folds ended up below
water level causing the water to leak past that point. You could just watch
it and see how low the level goes.

Hi there!

If it turns out you decide to scrap the liner... try a plantainer. It's made
by MacCourt and will line a whiskey barrely pond perfectly. I think you can
get them at Home Depot or Lowes. I don't sell them so I hope the group
doesn't think I'm spamming... I've used one for a small goldfish pond seen
here...

The info for the plantainer is here...

Good luck!!
