Fish will orient themselves to the light. Any chance the light entering
the tank from the outside is uneven?

Do you have a light in the hood of your tank? If not then the fish could be
orientating himself to the light in the room outside of the tank. I have a
moore who when the tank lights are turned off, swims at a very peculiar
angle.

the hood light switch as been broken for months. they get their light
from the kitchen ceiling light, so that could be it.....
