Do gf have good hearing? Just wondering if having airstones constantly
making noise with no stopping bugs the fish. Craig |

excellent hearing.
who knows, but the aeration is too important. Ingrid (who me?) wrote: Do gf have good hearing? Just wondering if having airstones constantly making noise with no stopping bugs the fish. I don't know about the fish but the noise annoys me!
There's more than one school of thought on this but I go with those who argue that if the surface is kept moving then airstones do not greatly increase gas exchange. The spray bar from an external filter can be set to move the surface with no noise whatsoever. Internal filter outlets can also direct across the surface of the tank. Its all you need. So I don't think you need an airstone unless you like the look of the bubbles. Stealing myself for the howls of protest! |

No, there is physics and then there is myth, not two schools of thought. Of course
oxygen is exchanged all the way up the track of bubbles. the real point is how are the GF doing. I dont find the sound obnoxious, but why not put the fish in a room where the noise is not so bothersome. It is physics when talking about the surface to volume ratio of gas exchange and
other physical principles that affect the movement of gas http://www.scuba-doc.com/physics.htm there also is the chemisty, which affects CO2 more because it chemically reacts with water http://www.science.uwaterloo.ca/~cch...waterphys.html Saturation is not the only goal of aeration. Good aeration also moves other kinds of gases out of the water. Which is why experts like the Goldfish Guru recommends at least 1 large airstone per 10 gallons of water. Ingrid (Mick Manford) wrote: Yes gas exchange can take place as the bubbles ascend but if things are pretty much at saturation already its not needed. It ain't physics by the way - its chemistry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List Manager: Puregold Goldfish List http://puregold.aquaria.net/ www.drsolo.com Solve the problem, dont waste energy finding who's to blame ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Unfortunately, I receive no money, gifts, discounts or other compensation for all the damn work I do, nor for any of the endorsements or recommendations I make. |
