What's Agent Forte?

Agent can be downloaded at
http://www.forteinc.com/
It appears to me that you download Agent, the full program, and can
use it for thirty days, afterwards you're supposed to pay for a
license or it will revert to Free Agent which has fewer features. I
use Free Agent and it's fine, a very good newsreader.

If you like the free version, I'll send you a registration number.
This will hold you for a year or so. I have a code generator program.

If we're going to start discussing the more nefarious side of what's
available on the internet in this group, shouldn't we confine our
discussions to phishing?

Ian.

No thanks. I like Free Agent as it is and actually want as few
features as possible so I don't have to mess with the program, check
out this feature and then the next one and decide how I want it and
blah blah blah. The simpler it is the better for me. :-)

Agent or Free Agent is a program for reading newsgroups. You can't
surf the web with it or do other stuff, only read newsgroups. It's
much better than the reader with IE or Netscape (is Netscape still
around?), at least IMO. When you install it you need to type into it
your ISP's email server address and a few other things, so you should
have this info in advance. Agent can be downloaded at
http://www.forteinc.com/

A good newsreader, but, may have nothing to do with missing posts. I
would talk with your Internet Service Provider before trying a new
program. I suspect the problem has to do with limits in the ISP's
contract with the news service.

Hi Derek! Have you tried any of the other news readers? I am told
there are a couple that have better features. I tried one a couple of
years ago while having problems with incomplete messages. I went back
to Agent (paid version), not because it was best, but because I was
familiar with it. (If it ain't broke don't fix it) : - )

I suggest you not do that Larry. Forte supplies a free version.
The price for a full version is small. Even so those small fees
provide the money for Forte to continue to supply updates as well as
free versions. Don't kill the goose that lays the golden egg.

Derek, you sound like a fellow "wimp." I too cry "Kiss" (keep it
simple stupid), but then am so happy with myself when I discover a
neat new feature. Once a complicated program is learned it is nice
to have the options. Every so often, I still find a new twist to
using Agent pay version, such as customizing the tool bar to show only
icons I really use or adding an icon that sorts the posts by thread.
I suspect that customizing feature is not part of the free version.

I haven't tried any other stand-alone newsreaders. I've used Free
Agent since the early or mid 90s, exactly because I'm familiar with
it. I have no interest anymore in trying new computer programs all the
time, it was cool in '93 when I got my first computer, now I find it
more like "work" as opposed to fun.

It's still the best.

The one thing I'm missing is more options for killfiling, e.g. the
ability to killfile based on text in the body of messages and all
fields in the header.

Is anyone else having problems viewing posts? I see more post when I go
through google groups, then through my outlook express.

Might be with your ISP, although I use OE at home and at work for
newsgroups too, and my work copy never wants to display all the messages
unless I say Catch up, and then the extra messages disappear again when I
leave. I've checked all the view settings. Damn MS contraptions.

I have that same problem on mine.. No idea what causes it though..

Ahh, fixed it, under View - Current View - unclick Show replies to my
messages, as this will not show all other messages.

This should be obvious but I have *lots* of messages, so that's my excuse
and I'm sticking to it ;~)

Probably not the OP's problem though.
