I use Hydor Ario air pumps in my tanks - they are reasonably
quiet....another option I've seen but not tried are Fluval Sray Bars - if
you've got a Fluval filter you just attach it to the pump.

I've witnessed the noise from those with external pumps and these were not
for me...

Agreed. At my max of 10 tanks, I looked into an external, central air
pump. The noise, coupled with the air lines all over the place
convinced me to simply buy smaller pumps. Rena pumps are fairly
inexpensive, very quiet, and reliable, too.

Dolphin 5 Star air pump. It is running my 15 tanks all with sponge filters &
it is extremely quite.

Heh. I'd be concerned about an aquarium equipment seller that doesn't
know the difference between silicone and silicon. g

I actually don't own any quite yet but from what I have read/heard and seen
the dolphin series of pumps look like the best jack of all trades pumps. You
could get one of the biggest version of dolphin pumps that has 5 powerful
outlets and thus only have to buy one, I think. For simple, little, pumps
the rena pumps look and sound (quiet) best, but you almost assuredly would
have to buy a number of them for all of your tanks if you want all of them
aerated in some way. Same with the luft g pumps (my favorite pump I actually
own), but they supply the most pressure compared to all others except for
the danner dynamaster # 2 exceptionally mechanical belt driven pump that has
2 outlets (probably the noisier of this bunch) being that it advertises a
pressure ceiling of 10 p.s.i. (the luft g pump has a pressure ceiling of 7
p.s.i., the others have less I am pretty sure) which is supposedly enough to
drive more than one protein skimmer if you're interested in salt water. I'd
like to find out more about the hydor air pumps like Gill was talking about.

Also humorous:

"....into the pump in the event of poser outage."

hehe
