hippo / regal whitespot....

Hi - my hippo tang has white sopt. It started off not too niticable but now
is all over him. I know these fish are very prone to it and my LFS says to
igonore it and do not dose any medicine, but I cant help thinking that I
should be.

Any advice on what point to start dosing?

quarantine it if you have other fish/corals in the tank. Then you can use
low salinity dips for a few days or medicate with the blue or green ICH
killers (I forget the names).

My Hippo has white spots all the time! They come and go. I've had him for
almost a year now. I do have a UV sterilizer unit on the tank and use it
when I see white spots appear. Do not use Ich medicines if you have live
rock and other forms of invert life.

There's a couple of products that are "reef safe" ICH treatments but I
haven't had any luck with them at all. If you can catch him, quarantine and
freshwater dips is the way to go although the "ignore it" advice wasn't all
that unreasonable.

Fresh water dip is not a good way to go.
A parasite under the skin of fishes never dies by fresh water dip.
If that ich seems to be serious, treat your hippo tang in quarantine tank
with copper for about 4 weeks. Or hyposalinity for 4 weeks. Most of people
think copper is the best medicine but may harm fish too if you don't use it
correctly.
Maybe putting cleaner shrimp in your tank can help a little.

The white spots/ich are from stress how big is your tank, does the hippo
have enough space? it could be getting stressed due to space. I would
not treat with anything as your lfs says but rather look for the cause
of the stress to the fish

I had an ich outbreak in my tank when I introduced cowfish. All fish got it.
I didn't want to treat my tank with medicines or using freshwater dips.
The simplest thing to do for me was to buy pair of cleaner shrimps. Two
tangs spotted them immediately after I've put them in the aquarium and got
their cleaning. After them in few days all fish except cowfish went to
cleaners few times a day. In a week all fish except cowfish were cured.
Cowfish lost spots one month after all other fish. It has passed 3 months
from the time and I see no sign of ick in my aquarium.
Cleaner shrimps won't cure the ick but may help alot.

Hmm - I have 2 cleaner shrimp but they dont seem to do anything to the
tang - they clean up the Blenny NP though. It is a standard 4 foot tank -
with sump its about 250l of water....

Not enough?

I had a powder blue that was happy for ages and the regal is smaller....

My tank is even larger, it is 180 G. Cleaners won't do anything on their
own. The fish must come to them and stay still. My sailfin tang even changes
color when cleaned. Only then they will do the cleaning. Cowfish was never
cleaned 'cose she didn't come to cleaners.
What shrimps do you have L. amboinensis or L. debelius? Mine are
amboinensis.

Nah mine are the same as yours - L. amboinensis, but they don't get to do
much cleaning these days. I take it that my tank should be big enough for
him?

I guess I should just let him settle for a bit. Problem is that they are so
shy when I put my hands in there or move the rock about a bit they seem to
get all ichy!

But they are such great fish!
