Default Damn, I'm ****ed = Pl*co problems

Well, I know that I have never typed anything but pl*co, and two of my
fish died with the asterisk on their backs, so the curse must
certainly be gaining strength, building immunity and growing
increasingly contagious thanks to all those non-believers who insist
on striking the e key instead of reaching up to the shift-8. Please,
rafm community, for the sake of the future health, perhaps the very
existence of pl*cos everywhere, make the extra effort to type
carefully. I was delighted when the Boston Red Sox were able to
Reverse The Curse, but I fear the pl*co curse may prove a bigger
challenge.

My bristlenose pl*co disappeared for the last month in the
heavily-planted tank. Just today he's re-appeared; perhaps the curse is
waning?

My really old ancistrus disappears for months sometimes. I'm sure I
would see him if I snuck up with a flashlight in the middle of the
night. The veggie discs I leave for him at lights out each evening is
always gone in the morning. Red dot or red asterisk, curse waning or
waxing, I really want to find a good female to keep my young male
company. He's been hanging out around the mouth of his cave waiting
for a pretty young thing to pass his way. My lfs told me he will stop
ordering ancistrus for a few months, while working with his supplier
to find out just how widespread the problem is. I might try a
different dealer, after checking out who is using which suppliers.

Just got home from work and of course checked out my tanks. I took a
double take when looking at my 29g, it looked a tad cloudy, not the norm.
So I did some looking around the rocks and found my Bristle Nose Pleco
dead. Not just dead, but his guts apparently eaten out. He's lived in
this tank for over a year with a Black Ghost and a "Snowflake" Eel, they
have never seemed to have any problems at all. It's like a kick in the
head, I'm not happy. Damn!!

hmm, wood fibre, algae tabs, zuchinni, various algaes and wood fungus (as
Richard says) and they should stay fine. I don't put much credence in
this pl*co business, but my plec can't read cause he only comes out at
night, so I should be fine ;~). Being emptied out is typical, but doesn't
mean your carnivores did it. If a carnivore can flip a plec over and keep
em still, then it can be meal time (hard to do though).

So now I'm looking at one of my Frontys swim to the top of his tank and
"gulp" air and swim to the bottom and "burb", all good fun for him, but I
was under the impression this wasn't good for them. What the hell is
going on??????

LOL, Fronts will do that. The problem is when they swallow the air, not
when they mouth and release it.

OHH GREAT!!!, now my Oscar just jumped out of his tank!!!!! No, not
really, but that's how I feel.

Wait till you get home to the sound of water trickling down the stairs.
When my 120g let go of the top of the front glass, it dumped about 60g
before the glass got pulled back in. That much water will soak a Gerber,
so then it just follows a path gravity makes for it. Poor fish were in
water 12" deep (left in the tank) with the most bewildered expressions
;~).

2nd prize was when my daughter insisted that I could not take a Rainbow
shark to the pet shop just because it didn't fit with my plans, and that I
should set up a completely new aquarium for the shark, which apparently
had become her favourite fish. So I set up a 20g in her room, put the
fish in and the next morning, I find it dried up on the floor (they are
good jumpers and it had found a hole). Before my daughter could notice,
I'm going from pet shop to pet shop looking to buy a Rainbow shark - when
the original plan was to get rid of the one I had *grrrr*.

Oh Yeah??? Well my Angelfish put themselves in plastic bags and started
rolling themselves toward the canal across the street. Good thing I was home
to stop them, but then again, if I was at work I'm not sure they could have
unlocked the front door. Now if I could just figure out where they got the
plastic bags from.
I'm not really sure why I like these stupid thing so much.

I doubt they will reveal their supplier's name (unless this is your
buddy, and even then you need to know who the others are buying from). I
never found a good supplier of Bushynose. Imports didn't have them and
the North Americans were too expensive. I was at the annual fish club
auction where I met a person who bred them, and he became my regular
supplier. I also managed to find a local supplier of Angelfish (another
bad fish to import). I would check with your local Aquarium Society. If
you don't have one, then this is your opportunity to start one and pick a
meeting spot close to your home (that's the advantage of being first ;~).

OK. I think I have made a discovery after a good deal of
consideration, I am getting a strong suspicion about why our pl*cos
have been dying. When I first logged in to rafm, and read the FAQ, a
couple of decades ago, I learned that the common name for a certain
group of suckermouth catfishes should never be spelled with the letter
"e" in the middle. The "e" was always to be replaced with a "*", an
asterisk. Since I have returned, I've noticed that nearly all posters
here are ignoring that important factor in writing about their pl*cos.
I've lost two ancistrus, both with a round, red dot on their backs,

That's "anc*strus".

It's also sweet to be the bristlenose breeder
they are easy and good earners.

I was trying not to laugh.
big tanks suck so hard when they let go.... can be dangerous too hey.
I secretly built a shmick little 4 globe MH light ballast. Took me a month
to save to buy bulbs (had to waste money on food and rent) and on the night
I put them on the tank, the octopus pulls them into the tank.
No one got hurt but it was a bloody ugly sound to hear from the tank in the
other room. And expensive for an hours metal halide rippling on da walls.
In the begining I tried to see silver linings, now I just work the numbers.
And I tells ya 9/10 fish swaps is detected by da kiddy. Maybe the rainbow
sharks are clone like enuf.... but people chasing shubunkins can be tricky,
even if they have photo's.

@netmax - what's a gerber? You said that amount of water will soak a
gerber? Is this some kind of protective water soaking device to
protect against leaking fish tanks?
