So what are the 'rules' on posting pics here? I'm not sure if I've seen
any.

The rules are the same for all the newsgroups; if the title doesn't have
"binary" or some other clear indication that photos are ok, then they are
forbidden. There are a variety of good reasons for this. One that may be
important to you is the fact that many ISPs will delete attachments or refuse to
accept posts that contain photos. Subscribers to those ISPs won't see your stuff
at all. Depending on the size of the attachment, subscribers to other ISPs may
just mark your post as read, call you bad names, killfile you, or complain to
your service provider.

Way down at the bottom of the list is the guy who receives your post, reads it,
and actually looks at the photo.

George,

I'm not sure what the "binary" part means. How do I make sure it is flagged
as ok. Do I need to put something in the title?

Sounds to me like you're saying pics can be ok, did I get that right? Looks
as if my last pic made it on the board ok. Who is the board admin?

Thanks,
B

No you didn't get it right :-)

There is to be no attachments on this newsgroups.
There are some newsgroups that will be named binary in the
name. This is "rec.aquaria.marine.reefs" not
"alt.slaskfjals.alskdfjal.binary"

There is no moderator for this newsgroup. We just beat
people up if they abuse the newsgroup :-)

George meant that the newsgroup name itself has "binary" in it.

The name of this newsgroup that we're on right now is
rec.aquaria.marine.reefs
Note: no "binary". All posts here should be just text.

There are other newsgroups, like
alt.binaries.pictures.celebrities
which are filled with almost nothing EXCEPT encoded photos. But note that
the newsgroup name has "binary" in it.

There is no flag or title to make it "ok" to put a binary post into a
non-binary newsgroup. This is a non-binary group.

Sounds to me like you're saying pics can be ok, did I get that right?

Not on rec.aquaria.marine.reefs, no.

Looks as if my last pic made it on the board ok.

Nothing technically stops you from being rude. You can post photos here all
day long, and they'll continue to "make it on the board". But you'll annoy
a lot of people at the same time. George already explained in his message
what might happen to the photo or to you if you continue to violate etiquette.

Who is the board admin?

You don't understand how newsgroups work. There is NO central administration.
This is a consensus, world-wide group of folks interested in the hobby.
There are rules of thumb and etiquette that has developed over the decades (!).
But no central human "administrator".

If you're interested in learning more about Usenet (aka newsgroups aka
Google groups), you can start at a place like this:
http://www.faqs.org/usenet/
for example
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/what-is/part1/
or
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/what-is/part2/

But the summary is, don't post binaries (like photos) here.
