Rock Food?

hey people.

Got the rock in---Pretty cool.

I know this sounds kind of stupid--but---
Now that its there---Am I supposed to "feed it" something?
If there is stuff dying on the rock, and bacteria eating that, isnt there
something I should be adding to the water to feed the stuff thats still
alive in the rock?

I've never seen this mentioned in books, but my take is that the stuff should be
fed. Just dump in a little fish food every day; that will decay and produce the
ammonia, nitrites, etc. needed by the bacteria.

Coffee is only a way of stealing time that should by rights belong to
your slightly older self.

For Live Rock, if you want to promote growth of Coralline algae, you can add
a product called PURPLE-UP. It does work; just not over night, it takes some
time. Once the Coralline begins to grow.. watch out, it will also grow on
your glass. You will need a razor to remove it.

I didn't feed mine in my first tank, I did in my second. Can't see any
difference except for spaghetti worms. My second tank sat fishless for a
long time and I started feeding some small algae pellets and the pods
fought over them, I mean all out war, so I still add a couple every 3-4
days. The pellets are actually turtle pellets which is the only thing my
freshwater silver dollar will eat now and his tank is right next to SW
no. 2 tank.

How can you say it does work ?
I have never used it, but I have plenty of coraline...
Have you done two tanks test, one with, the other
without the product to compare how fast will it grow?

I would not promote product like this if I was not
sure if it really works... coraline grows fine in
every tank without any addition of "purple-up".
Just keep the calcium level high and water clean and
you will get it, without spending money on snake oil.

I would not add any nutrients during rock curing phase...
Worms and bacteria have plenty of decaying matter to eat then.
Maybe later, when water chemistry will be back to normal...

I agree. I believe that StringerBell said the rock is already cured, though.

Yes---the rock was advertised as "pre-cured". There is lots of stuff all
over it. Of course I dont know what is is. There are some green plants
growing off it. There is even an area that looks like it has (polyp?) holes.
Most of it is black ( dead)--but there is a good sized green patch on it.

I would not call purple up "snake oil", but using the two
parts would be better. Purple up is just calcium and
alkalinity additive. Using a two part gives better
controle of calcium and alkalinity.

It would be honest if they call it just calcium additive.
Instead they claim their product does what happens
naturally in the healthy reef tank.
