Enrollment to the 2007 edition of the Dive GIS summer course is now open. Enroll by April 15th and be entitled to 10% fee reduction. The course is well suited for people novice to GIS and diving, as well as for people that have already some experience in one of the two or in both fields and wish to improve their skills. Course program, details, photo gallery of 2006 edition at: http://www.mappamondogis.it/divegis.htm Overview This course will take place in the rich of history and nature Marine Protected Area of Capo Rizzuto, Italy. Participants will have the chance of becoming successful Geographic Information Systems users and certified divers through the ESRI Authorized "Introduction to ArcGIS 9.x" and the PADI "Open (or Advanced) Water Diver" courses. Additionally overlap modules will introduce the participants to GIS-based tools and techniques of marine scientists with underwater and computer sessions. They will learn how to map marine habitats from satellite/aerial images and verify them on the field, perform marine fauna and flora surveys and find associations among all the biotic and abiotic components using GIS. "Introduction to ArcGIS 9.x ESRI authorized course" This course covers fundamental GIS concepts as well as how to query a GIS database, manipulate tabular data, edit spatial and attribute data, and present data clearly and efficiently using maps and charts. Participants learn how to use ArcMapT, ArcCatalogT, and ArcToolboxT and explore how these applications work together to provide a complete GIS software solution. Students will receive an internationally recognised ESRI certificate at the end of this module. "GIS and Remote Sensing of the Marine Environment" This course covers fundamental Remote Sensing concepts and how to use this technology for marine resources mapping. It gives and overview of image analysis and classification methods and an in depth practical case study of marine habitat mapping by mean of remote sensing images visual interpretation. "Marine Fauna identification and data collection on the field" Students will learn how to identify marine fauna and flora, how to collect scientific data regarding their distribution and how to use GIS handheld tools and GPS units. Students will also collect habitat data for remote sensing image interpretation ground thruthing and accuracy assessment. Data will be collected while on the field, diving and snorkeling.
