Desperate - murky water

Wonder if anyone can help - I'm getting desperate - and the fish are
getting very hard to see :-(
My fluviall 3 filter (big tank) broke over 3 months ago. Replaced it
with another fluviall 3 but they've changed the design. The tank got
cloudy - new tank syndrome - which after 6 weeks went very green.
Realised I had an algae bloom - thats now cleared, but the tank is
just getting cloudier and cloudier. I've tested nitrites, amnonia and
pH and all seem OK. One fish got fin rot which I've treated but I am
concerned about the quality of the water. I've phoned the filter
manufacturers and the shop a few times and have been given consistent
advice, but its not working. I'm doing 20% water changes every two
days and using cycle (for new tank set ups) but its not working. I've
put in a fluviall 1 at the other end of the tank a few weeks ago but
its making no difference.
When I look inside the fluviall 3 it seems clean apart from at the top
of the sponge. Is it possible I've put it together incorrrectly? (Air
is coming out of it).
Is there anything else I can try? Anything I could have been doing
wrong?

Sounds like your algae bloom is returning. I had cloudy water which I
thought was a bacterial bloom (more white cloudiness than green) but turned
out to be an algae bloom. I bought a Vortex diatom filter which made the
water crystal clear. The diatom filter media was green after running it a
few hours.

There is hardly any algae on the sides of the tank - certainly no more than usual -
athough I must admit the water does look a bit green but its hard to
tell as I've got a blue background.
Can it be an algae bloom even if the algae isn't on the sides of the
tank or the logs?

it could be that algae is suspended in the water (green water) and is too
small to be caught by your filter, which is common with new tanks (not
having algae on sides).

What seems to be happening, is your new filter is going thru a cycle, that
means, the tank is cycled, but the good bacteria hasn't been established in
the new filter...

I'd try a combination of a few things..
Less light during the day
Less feeding, only feed enough to see bellies pooching a bit... don't let it
hit the bottom...
water changes that are conditioned properly, less frequently, more volume...
do a 50% one time, let it sit for 5 days, and compare...

I recently had a green water after upgrading my filter... it has gotten
better, but it takes a bit of patience...
