ive used it once .i bought it cos it was a catch all remedy.
it probably more or less kills your bio. filter unlike some of the other
remidies.-if not, it will have done alotta of damage . i tranferred the
fish to another small tank while i treated the big tank as well as the fish
cos the fish wont do well or survive with an immature filter and meth. blue.

so the answer is yes. i might have bought something else had i known

you can apply it as a topical lotion on the body which ive done as well with
cotton-bud stick on affected areas.
tip;- do it through a net so they dont flap. be quick.have all your
equipment ready when the time comes on hand.

A freind of mine has a 4" Discus on the Methelyne Blue
to treat (14day treatment) an ich breakout. He did not
use a hospital tank so I'm concerned about a relapse when
his biofilter fails.

Then i read that Methelyne Blue neutralizes ammonia and
Nitrites, is that true?

Considering this, lets say he were to do a 10% water change
every day after the 14day treatment and slowly phase out the
Blue, would the left over dilluted Blue minimize the ammo and
Nitrite spike and in the meantime allow the biofilter to recover
as the Blue gets slowly phased out? Far fetched theory?

If not what is the best way to proceed? (He dosen't have
another tank) The 4" fish is in a 38gal with a 3" PLECO.

why is he treating a parasitic condition with an anti fungal medication ?. I
would think a product with malachite green and formalin like Rid Ich or
Quick Cure would be the way to go. Meth Blue as an anti fungal should not
kill the filter media.

As other posters have said, methylene blue is not very effective for
parasites-you are better off with a formalin/malachite medication.
Methylene blue is reported to have a mild effect against nitrite toxicity,
but as far as I know not against ammonia. It is toxic to some bacteria,
including the nitrosomonas in the biofilter. All in all not a very useful
medication when compared to the others available these days. I think a fish
as sensitive sa discus would be very stressed by the disruption in the
biofilter.

Do yourself a favor-buy a UV sterilizer, plumb it correctly (it must be
plumbed in parallel with the main pump-flowrate through the sterilizer is of
paramount importance) and you will never have a disease outbreak again.

UV sterilizers of course help to eliminate disease causing pathogens, free
swimming parasites etc however they will never completely rid a tank of
everything.

-------------
Properly sized and plumbed sterilizers with the proper flowrate eliminate
the vast majority of disease causing pathogens. Assuming you have good
water quality and have chosen good tankmates, your fish should be able to
fight off any infection it happens to still be exposed to.

I have used a sterilizer for 15 years and in all that time have never had a
fish die of disease. They have died of aggression (my fault for being
ignorant), but not disease.

So in a practical sense, I stand by my use of the word never.

Short of good bio filtration, a sterilizer is the single most important
piece of filtration equipment you can own.
