Likelihood of crossbreeding?

I have a 75 gallon with an assortment of Malawis and have tried to pick
species so as not to get any cross breeding.
A lfs owner said that if you get species that look too much alike you
will get hybrids, so working from that assumption,
I have:

Red zebras 3
Red top cobalts 3
Acei yellow tail 1
socolofi 3
Yellow lab 4
"maingano" johanni 4
kennyi 3

Your advice is appreciated.

The likelyhood is that four can quite easily cross breed.. The Kenyi is in
the same family as the Zebra, the red tops and socolofi... I have had my
Dominant Kenyi male breed with the above.. Also had the Red Top Blues cross
with the Zebra's.. Pretty fish for feeders...

Agreed. My male kennyi "prefers" my female socolofi. Pretty fish - at least
my Compressiceps think so.

Thats who my Male Kenyi decided to breed with first... Apparently the powder
blue colouration appeals to the male Kenyi, as opposed to the same colour
with stripes.. Needless to say, now my female Kenyi's are going tan coloured
as a result of a few broods...

I actually bought a holding socolofi and the babies looked like zebras,
orange ones and dark blue ones. I am raising them as of now, more to see
what they look like (and if anyone wants one, I am sure to tell them its a
mix, and not to breed it). Soon they will be going in with the polypterus
for lunch. I do not keep zebras, as I find they are too aggressive in my
tank and she has not held again since. I do have yellow labs, acei's and
johanni's in with her, so those should be safe.

Don't be suprised to find out she might hold again... If you don't want them
to breed, you might consider turning the water temp down a bit too, 74F or
about 22C and this will slow donw the urge's to breed. Slow the feeding down
to twice a day, and lightly.. Lots of food and and warmer temps seem to
triger the cichlids into breeding ..At least this is what I have observed my
self...
