Default Smelly Water

Hello All

Over the last day or so the water in my aquarium has started to smell.
Regular water changes are carried out and the water is crystal clear. I have
the correct size filter for the tank and an extra filter running also.
Any advice would be truly received

Not sure what type of smell you are referring to, but I've experienced
unusual smell on two occasions. The first time happened when I was
first setting up the tank (way, way overstocked, not enough
filtration, etc) causing smell that reminded me of more or less septic
tank. Although water did appear clear, I was struggling with keeping
nitrite down, nitrate down, etc.

The second time I smelled something unusual was about a month ago. Not
an offensive smell, but smell nonetheless and I couldn't figure it
out. What I started noticing several weeks prior to this was darkish
stuff on all the cloth plants. Although I do check ammonia, nitrite,
and nitrate, I've quit checking pH thinking that it would not change.
Surprise, surprise, the usual high pH (7.5 - 8) has dropped to 6.8 -
7. I don't know what caused it, but after several successive water
changes, everything is back to normal again and no smell.

This did teach me a lesson though. Good idea to test water for pH as
well.
