you dont want the bacteria to die, you need the bacteria and it needs food
"GiveMeABMW" wrote in message ... Hi, I have a new tank I posted about the other day (see "Cycle or no cycle") which last night began to look slightly cloudy (a white cloud). I can still see through it. I plan to get an ammonia (as well as some others) test today to see if that's risen because of it, but what else should I do? I assume I shouldn't add fish until the water has cleared. Will the bacteria die away on their own? |

Will the bacteria die away on their own? Sounds like a clear-cut case of "new tank syndrome" to me. See http://faq.thekrib.com/begin-cycling.html for all the gory details. You don't want the bacteria to "die" rather you want it to find a home. Read that article! Check out a product by Marineland called "Bio-Spira" not available online, only at some LFSs. Gunther |

OK..finally have some tank stats for y'all:
Ammonia: 1.0 (person at pet store found .5) ph: 8.4 (7.8 in store) Nitrate: 20 Nitrite: 0 Hardness: 300 Alkalinity: 300 (Any reason for the discrepancies? Which one should I go by?) So, basically my water is crap right now. I've put in "ph decreaser," I plan to change 25% of the water tomorrow, and add Amquel+. Any other suggestions? I don't remember my water being so bad when I had a fish tank before. ![]() |
