Flourite quandries...

I recently set up a 10g planted aquarium, and this time around I
thought i would try and use 100% flourite as a substrate. After
rinsing thoroughly and putting it in the tank, when i planted my
plants last night the tank was so cloudy i couldnt even see to the
back of the tank...so todayt he water was much more clear but all the
plants had a fine layer of 'dust' on them, so i took them out one by
one and rinsed them in water to get the dust off and replanted. After
i replanted tho, guess what, the water is back to its original
cloudiness so im guessing tomorrow this same 'dust' will be on the
plants again - is there anything i can do about this or is this really
a problem at all??? Any suggestions?

I had the same thing happen 2 weeks ago and what with the shrimp, snail and
fish action the dust has pretty much gone. The Cabomba and Hornwort still
have a residue on some parts but Anubias and Java Ferns are back to normal.

It will settle out in time.
Did we mention how fishkeeping teaches you patience?

not to sound like a dumbass - but what do you do with the turkey
baster? like BLAST the dirt off the leaves or suck it off?

LIGHT blasting. More of a gentle "poofing".

Kinda too late now maybe... but ideally you want to put a few handfuls of
flourite in a 5 gallon pail and rinse it about 5-6 times with water in the
tub or from the hose. I spent about 3 hours cleaning two bags of flourite
for my 15 gallon aquarium.

When you first put it in, it will be cloudy. Be patient, in a few days
you'll see some good clearing up. You might want to clean out your filter

Personally, I think that is too much cleaning. As others have
mentioned, the more you try to clean it, the more dust it creates.

The best method I've found for rinsing was to get a piece of window
screen material, fold the corners up to create a big net, and pour in
as much flourite as the net will hold. Then rinse for a few minutes,
and you are done. The dust just washes away.

Also, 2 bags in a 15 gallon? How deep did you want the substrate?
