the one's I have had in the past have all been quite loud IME I can hear
them at the other end of the house which is about 65' from the tanks. its not a distractive sound thought and is not a "bang" sound but more like a "click" sounds a lot like the glass of the tank cracking. kc "logan" wrote in message et... I am considering getting a Tiger Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus bellulus) and pairing it with a Luther's Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus lutheri) in my 7g nano, but I am somewhat reluctant as I have heard that Pistol shrimps can be very loud and what amusing at first quickly becomes annoying. Is this true or more myth than fact? Thanks. |

LOL.. like glass cracking.. I would freak out until I figured out what it
was. The loaches in my Oscar tank make a clicking sound when they chase each other around the tank. It was neat at first... then it got sooo monotonous.. It wakes me up sometimes, our pistol shrimp (4 inches long) is a very
amusing animal, looks like a red lobster Battle Bot, it snaps very hard, enough to wake me up one room over, but watching this animal cruz around is worth it. The shrimp has a tunnel under every rock, and I believe it is having sex with our Lawnmower Blenny, the Blenny looks kinda flushed, but he ain't talking, dogs and cats living together, how'd have thought???? flopping all over the house with nowhere to go, lol... Matthew A,
Thanks, NoCents "Matthew A." wrote in message news:IVBTa.14706$Bp2.13093@fed1read07... You ask if they're loud do you. Well if one takes into account exactly what that "clicking" noise is, yes they're loud. That "clicking" sound you hear is actually a sonic boom. Much as is the "crack" of a whip or airplane breaking the sound barrier. Except the shrimp isn't moving that fast but the tiny bubbles that air created as it "snaps" shut it's claw are. Test have been conducted by researchers at Hubbs/SeaWorld reseach Inst. that measure the sound pressure these guys could create at being over 140 dB @ 2.5 cm. dB wise that's loud enough to cause damage to tissue. Hence what they use their talent for. To stun prey. "logan" wrote in message et...
