Just wandering, hows the "burning water" experiment coming?

We've been having some warmer weather up here in Pennsylvania. So I 've
had some time to start cleaning up outside and working on the new pond.
The grounds still too wet and frozen to start digging, so I decided to
work on the campfire. It will be about 2 1/2- 3 feet from the edge of
the pond, with the waterfall for a backdrop.
I took some pictures of the flames, they can be seen at:

My experiment with the "fire on the water" is still on hold , as there
is still an iceberg on the 500 gallon Temp. pond. It froze solid since
it is totally above ground. Meanwhile the koi have been vacationing in
the Tomb, in my basement. By the time it thaws, I hope to have the
prototype burner finished.

And I think I might try a propane bubbler this spring, myself.
Question, if pre-mixed with air and lighted above the surface, would I
be able to have a flame /underwater?/

Still on hold, been working my butt off bringing up a new network.

Was planning to experiment today, but last night things went wrong, so
to the office I go...

I'm planning to use a propane tank & regulator from a gas grill to
start with, have them on hand, so I'm ready to try it if I can just
find the time.

My new pond is still fish-free, though frogs & algae are plentiful.
Haven't yet decided what to put in there, as my first choice (Tilapia)
turned out to require a permit (according to my local Cooperative
Extension Service agent).

Your pond campfire looks good, like a nice place to pull up a chair
and stare at the coals for a while.

You'll need oxygen. Look around for a propane cutting torch. It
mixes oxygen and propane to make a flame for cutting steel in a
junkyard. It will probably make a flame underwater.

Here's why I love this group! I /have/ cutting torch hardware on hand,
just didn't think of it! Now to get some bottles of gas...

Today I presented The Wacky World of Water Gardening at our local MG's
Spring Garden Day, the Keynote speaker from the Wetside of WA showed a
slide of a wonderful pond. Her talk was mainly about structures, so while
this slide was up, she said, "This is a wonderful pond and the owner just
loves to have new people sit in this bench (the structure) right next to
the pond, at which time flames shoot up out of the water. Evidently the
owner is a special effects designer for movies/TV. So there's the experts
you need to talk with Mike. ;o) Obviously it can be done. ~ jan

chagoi, I hope you can learn form you Lenape ancestors. DO NOT use
local shale around your campfire. The gases and moisture trapped
between the layers of rock expand and "Mak-um boom boom". It is very
dangerous.

Not really a problem in my area. I live in the "Cement Belt" area of
eastern Pa. I mostly have to deal with clay mixed with a little bit of
limestone. The "Slate Belt" area runs about 10 miles north of me. So the
shale area begins about 5 miles north from me.
