Will a 20 gal tub be large enough for a lotus tubor with one leaf, and one growing point? The diameter at the base of the pot is about 16".
How deep should I make the clay? Thanks, Heather |

How deep should I make the clay? Heather first things first. It is prefered that you don't post to Usenet in HTML. Many readers can't view it, as Usenet is an ASCII hang out. Now on to your Lotus... You can plant your lotus in just a few inches of soil. The tubor needs to be just lightly covered. You may also want to put a small piece of slate over the tobur to protect from fish until it gets rooted. Be careful not to harm the growing tip. Plant the tubor near the edge of the pot not in the middle. And plant it parallel with the pot edge. Lotus tubors grow laterelly so they need room to go around and around. BV. |

Thanks - but what I really meant was how much clay soil should I put into the pot? Not the depth of the actual plant. I will hardly cover the tubor and have a small flat rock for it. But when the plant gets going I know it will grow deeper to the bottom of the pot so need to know how many inches of clay to give it to spread out in. Thanks, Heather |

Lotus tubors do most of their growth laterelly not down into the pot. If you plant the tubor in 4 inches of mud, that will be all you need. Most will say the tubor's pot should be in a few inches of water, but mine have been doing well in 2-4 feet of water. I also mentioned that the tubor should be near the edge of the pot so the lotus can grow out and around. Check out, http://darofamily.com/jeff/files/lotus.jpg for a diagram of what I am talking about. I am waiting for Nedra the Goddess of Lotus to step in here. BV |

When you are planting anything in a container in a pond keep in mind
that some day you will have to drag it out again. Make sure with soil and water and mature plant you will be able to lift the full container without making an absolute mess in the water or giving yourself a hernia. In the beginning I used larger, heavier containers than I do now. Now I use the absolutely smallest one that will allow the plant to grow well. And if possible I use a container made from plastic with a minimum of soil in the bottom. I also stack rocks on the soil surface to prevent fish from digging around, but I carefully remove these before trying to hoist the thing out of the pond for transplanting, dividing, etc. Keep it as light as you can. Its easier to put a plant into the pond than it is to drag it out. You will be thankful later. Lalu |

Goddess of Lotus -- what a lovely and sexy name, BV!
Thanks a heap. You have covered the topic ... I can't think of a thing to add ;-) We all know of your success in planting lotuses in 4 feet of water... It won the contest!! The ones growing in two feet of water were right behind. Do you have blossoms yet? For the third year I was unable to divide the lotuses. No one would believe the fantastic growth and three blossoms - Wow! I'll post pics of the pond shortly. We have some floater and a couple of aerials. I also have a few leaves going yellow and are torn. I think the frogs have been using them for extracurriculer activities. BV. |
