Please Help can not figure out what is up with fish dying

Hi everyone

I have this issue on my hands where i have already gave up on searching for
an answer.

It all began with addition of neons and goldfish to an aquarium where i have
already had two eels and two arowanas.

Anyway two neons and goldfish died in about two week period where i noticed
that they had hard time coming up to the top to feed, and when they tried it
seemed like they needed a lot of effort to swim up. Eventually i have
discovered that they stay on the bottom laying on the side and were looking
around an breathing. Also i have noticed that their bellies became somewhat
big and got white color to them. In about a day or two after they stayed
motionless on the bottom they died. One thing i found interesting is that
when you touch them they would start swiming normally for an hour or two and
then go back to the bottom. The second shock whas about two month later when
all of a sudden i have discovered that one of my arowanas was swimming on
the bottom and had trouble swimming up, where it was usually at. Two days
later i saw her bottom up on the bottom of the aquarium and what was strange
it was looking around and breathing. I saw her swim couple of times but two
days later she died too. Today one of my eels died also, it was perfectly
healthy this morning, swimming around coming out for worms but at 12
midnight i found it on the bottom with it's belley up, and again it was
somewhat bigger that it should have been. With the eel i noticed that he
started to swim eratically prior to his death and he tried to come up to the
top for some reason.

Right now one of me new goldfish shows sympthoms of inability to swim up, it
speeds up and once it gets to the top of the aquarium it slows down and
drops to the bottom, the starts swimming up again.


If anyone has a clue what can cause those sudden deaths and inability for
the fish to swim up to feed i would greatly appreciate it.

first off, you are mixing the wrong fish. You have cold water and warm
water fish together which is no-no. And why did you put neons and
goldfish in with eels and arrowana's? for food? What kind of eels? You
know arrowana's get 3-4 feet long? A lot of eels get that size also. What
is the temp in the tank? What is the hardness and carbonate hardness? what
about ph? How often do you clean the substrate and change water? What size
tank? what kind of filtration? How large are the arrowana's now?

Well

In terms of mixing up a fish i would say that they are very friendly to each
other. At this point after 5 month there is no casualties due to
differences that they have.

The fire Eel that i had just died along with silver arowana which died week
prior


As for the so called hostile fish i have African Butterflyfish who is no
trouble at all since it stays at the top and Black Ghost who lives in the
shell and comes out only when worms fall down.


In terms of Ph i have just checked it and it is around 6.6 and 6.8, Ammonia
is at 0, temperature is at 78.

At this point this is waht i have living in a 45 Gallon tank:

3 Cardinal Tetras (bought with arrowanas and eels at the same time), 3
Platties just got them couple of days ago, 4 Rainbowfish,
1 huge Plecto (had him for a year), 2 Cherry Danios ( bought same time with
eels and arowana) , 1 African Butterfly about 4 inces and Black Ghost who is
about 6 inches.


As for the maintenace, i get about 25% evaporation a week so i just add
water every week. Prior to adding new water i let it sit in the bucket for
couple of days.

For some mystyrious reason my tank does not need much cleaning since for the
past 1.5 years i have never seen an algae growth in it and as for the gravel
cleaning i do it every 3 month.

As for carbonate and substrate, never actually paid attention to it. Was
always only checking for Ph and Ammonia.

I will be far more blunt: This is the absolute most moronic conncotion of
fish that I suggest you are a troll of great amplitude. If not, you need to
start from square one with aquaria.

Hate to say this but...
that is why your fish died...honestly its not a matter of how well fish get
along that determines their suitability towards eachother....Goldfish do
produce a ****eload of ammonia which is VERY DEADLY to other types of
fish......as i mentioned in the other NG, the fish are dying from internal
bacterial infections...all the types of fish you mentioned are VERY
different to eachother and require different things....

Please for the sake of the fish, SEPARATE them....they MAY have been fine
for a few months, but now nature is catching up...

You caused your tank to cycle, if it ever did at all. Goldfish crap heaps
and produce copious amounts of ammonia. If your filter isn't up to it and
you state you don't maintain your tank other than topping up an absurd
amount of evaporated top water then I'm not surprised you have had
everything go to that big tank in the sky.

Poor fish - all of them.

If I were you I'd sort out the heat problem, sort out your biological
filter, do some research into community/tropical/cold water species and stop
being cruel through your apparent ignorance.

Have a great 2005, a better one for any future aquarians you take care of
and may the great Lords Avalokiteshvara and Mayatreya bless you and your
aquarium. May you be enlightened to the realisation that you are playing
with the fate of other sentient beings.

Well thank you for all those comments tells a lot about your knowledge of
the aquariums.

One thing i want to say is THANKS to McEve for a defence.

As you guys may have read, if you did read, at this point i have no gold
fish, third post shows that they all were gone.

Besides i had an aquarium for over two years now and i had many different
setups in terms of fish types. For this particular setup, some of the fish
is over 5 month old and some are over a year old. Prior to all of this new
fish i had same types for over a year but had to give them away to my friend
since they all got too big over time and it was too crowded.


the question was simple what is up with enlarged stomachs and fish laying
upside down for several days still alive and when touched they would swim
normally then go back to the bottom?

Simple ha. If someone has a reasonable information about this issue i would
greatly appreciate it,
but if your knowledge extends up to the point of some read books on which
fish to have and which not, please do not bother with offencive comments.
Trust me there are even stranger tank setups with guramis, oscars, tetras,
arowanas, gars, and angels in the same tank and they live together perfectly
for years, it's just a matter of introducing the fish at the same time
within a week, that is when they do not touch each other.
