Try putting some eggcrate between your refugium and the return section
to keep the plants in its own area.

The red stuff - not sure what you are dealing with yet. Does it look
like pink cotton candy? Or is it smoother like Cyano bacteria?

It seems that as you say, it just needed to settle a bit. These appear to
be just bits that came loose in the process of transporting.
