Default new planted tank setup- what about the filter?

i just setup a 55g tank, i read somewhere that the carbon filter stuff
is bad for a planted tank. do i just take those out and let the filter
run to circulate water? i have a whisper or penguin 330 or 350 or
something, dual spinning wheels.
