I'm sure this etiquette came about during the days of dail-up and 80mb hard drives. Makes sense though. You're suggesting the etiquette is outdated, and just a product of silly old people who haven't changed with new technology. You've missed the fact that the volume of data in Usenet newsgroups has grown faster than either bandwidth or hard drive space. The binaries newsgroups place significant strain on even large, well-connected servers.
