Default Murky Water

Hi all, I just found this newsgroup.....my ten gallon tank has three
goldfish in it. No matter how many different chemicals I've tried, the
water gets murky and green after the second or third day of a water change.
I've tested the ph and so far that seems fine. I put a 20-40 gallon filter
in it, and the water is still lousy looking.

The fish are healthy and thriving, but for my own enjoyment, I would like
for them to be in clean, clear water.

Any input greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tispe

Tispe,

You are overstocked. Have you tested for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrates? Goldfish
typically do better with 10 gallons per fish - this is because they are messy
and grow huge.

I know that feeling. One thing I will suggest is to get a bigger tank (try ebay
for a second hand one).

Do you have a filter, and can you get those water readings done?
How much water do you change and how often?

Ok, so that gives you an excuse to go and buy a bigger tank! ;-)

Check the want ads in the newspaper. There are often used ones available.
Some pet stores will carry used tanks also at a discount.

Good luck!

I started off in a similar situation to Tispe and now have a four foot
tank. Still wondering what to put in the little one; I fancy a) corys
and b) kuhlis. hrrrrrmmmmm.
fishkeeping is disturbingly addictive.

Yes, I just installed a 20-40 gallon filter, thinking that might be the
solution....The water readings seems to be normal. If I want the water to
be really clean for awhile, I must remove the fish, empty the tank, wash the
gravel, yada yada. But I understand this is not good for the fish. But, if
I empty, say half the water, the remaining water is still murky and I don't
get the clear water I want after I add new water.

Sophie summed it up when she said fishkeeping is curiously addictive.....I
get so much enjoyment watching them swim around and this is the first time
in my life that my goldfish have lasted almost two years, so I'm really "on
a roll" now.

Funny thing...my son has a 20 gallon tank with 7 goldfish, each one about 2
inches long, and his water is never murky......and the number of fish is way
too much for a 20 gallon, and he has a smaller filter than mine.

This is a very interesting newsgroup.......and I appreciate all the
responses.
