===============================
She showed me a pic of the heron avoiding the spray by coming up behind the
thing, and fishing next to it. The herons learned to avoid the spray. I
can't explain it any better.

Ooooh, she had it too close to the pond in that case. Kind of like that
heron video BV has a link to on his website, where the fish string is too
close to the pond and the heron just snaked it's head under. Gulp!

I trained my dog to kill them. If you're not good at dog training a rifle
that fires 22 shorts is sub-sonic.

Oh, that will bring in the neighbors and the game commission post
haste. Remember, shooting one is a Federal rap here on the west shore
of the big salty pond.
If you are giong to pop them with the .22, there are fine shot shells
available in rimfire.

Must do a heck of a number on a liner pond. "Sorry honey, I hit the heron,
but also the pond, which I didn't notice as I went in for a congratulatory
Bud. The pond slowly leaked away and the fish didn't make it." Oops! ~ jan

You know, I am just kidding (except about the dog).
I did have someone tell me in CA State law says it's legal to protect your
livestock?

Also, If it is legal to use an electric fence. I guess it would be okay to
use an electric koi. If you took some of the floating koi that are supposed
to deter herons and hooked them up to the fence wire with a pin that pulled
like a grenade to make the conection after he had the koi out of the water.

Anyone have a link to the actual federal law?

I do :-)
http://laws.fws.gov/lawsdigest/migtrea.html

You can not "pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, attempt to take,
capture or kill, possess"

That still leaves harsh language and dirty looks.

Thanks, Interesting. It doesn't say you can't beat the crap out of them and
break their legs. That's why they're so damn sneaky and fly away.

The pellets are tiny and are only effective for killing small
varmints, like rats at close range. I wouldn't even shoot a snake
with one that would be cruel. (I'd kill the snake with a stick.) I
feel the same about the heron. If I were to shoot one it would be
with something that would kill it, not wound it to fly away and die
somewhere someone else could watch it die. That someone else might
be more sensitive than I, plus he might call the Wildlife people.

Regards,

Hal
