Bullfrogs invade France

Apparently the initial bullfrogs were released into
a French pond as a joke.

A campaign in France to exterminate frogs may sound like the beginning of=
a civil war, but these are no ordinary frogs.

Hunters working for the government's wildlife agency will be stalking
ponds in south-west France this weekend, aimed with flash-lights,
rifles, silencers and night-vision sights.

They have been mobilised for the most intensive effort so far to
terminate a plague of giant Californian bullfrogs which is threatening
to disrupt the ecology of the Gironde, Dordogne and several other
d=E9partements.

Good for the French, here the goody two shoes would probably kick up

If bullfrog legs aren't edible, just what frog leg's are used in those
dishes?

Tongue-firmly-in-cheek (not meaning to offend any of our French ponders)
isn't there some rumor about the French thinking with their stomach? They
would tolerate their native species destruction if the frogs were edible?

All I can say is good luck, they were introduced in 1969, I'd say the frog
has the upper hand. Another invasion the French allow to go on for far too
long before taking up arms. I am tickled that they blamed it on
"California" bullfrogs. K30, weren't these frogs originally brought to the
states from Europe? ~ jan

Bullfrogs aren't native to California
at all. They are native to Eastern part
of the USA. They crossed the Rockies
due to frog farming, escaped and are all
over the place now.
Biologists do clear them out from time to
time in areas where native frogs are in danger
of being snarfed up by the bullfrogs.

I'm not sure what frogs the French eat...

They seem to import a lot of these frogs from Asian countries to eat,
Kaloula pulchra. Otherwise known as Asian Bullfrog, so much so that
their native countries are in danger of being wiped out of these frogs
and the insect problem is climbing because of their absence.

Our north american bullfrog is Rana catesbeiana.

they're just so "different" there...

Seriously, you're probably close to the point. Obviously, American
Bullfrogs have been considered edible but it's probably beneath the notice
of the Cordon Bleu to cook a substandard frog.

What foolishness? I have a hard time believing the France-French came up
with the foolish idea to deep fry slivers of potato. I think it was most
likely Southern USAmericans of French descent that came up with that idea.
I.E., Fried Chicken, Fried Eggplant, Fried Sweet Potato, etc... And they
should never have been called "Freedom" Fries, but "Fattening" Fries, imho.
So the French should be grateful to have gotten their moniker off that
product.
