Yes they certainly have that reputation. If I keep them I think I will
have to have a spp tank with perhaps some kind fo non-harrassable algae
eating fish and that's it. Do you know if there is an algae eating spp
which would do OK with barbs? (The lfs had flying foxes in the barb
tank and they seemed OK - holding their own. But the barbs were very
young and probably not yet very aggressive,

Many Thanks,

Muddy

Hi,

What loaches do you have? I need to think about something to eat some
algae. (I'm new to aquascaping and I suspect I could easily end up
with a lot of algae especially when I get the the point where I need to
start dosing with KNO3.)

Thanks!

Muddy

I have 3 Yoyo Loaches, which I originally acquired for a Snail problem. They
do seem to eat some Algae, but the SAEs (Siamese Algae Eaters) and
Otocinclus do a better job. The Otos seems a little fragile though.

Mmmmm - I wondered about SAEs. Do you think they would be OK with
golden barbs, tiger barbs or black widow tetra - I've heard that as
they mature they become really quite aggressive?

Thanks,

Muddy

My loaches never ate algae. If you want a really algae free tank buy a
clown-Pleco (they only get 5 to 6" long) and a few otocinclus (sp?). You
wouldn't believe how they cleaned up my tanks.

I've got Rosy Barbs (sold as Golden Rosy Barbs), Tiger Barbs, Yoyo Loaches,
SAEs, Cardinal Tetras and Otos together. The Barbs seem to interact (bother)
the Loaches most, not sure why. I did lose a T'Barb a couple of weeks ago.
Likely bumped off by his own kind. The problem with SAEs is that you have
to be sure to get true SAEs, not CAEs or some other variety. CAEs can be
very aggressive as they get bigger. FishProfiles.com is a good site for fish
compatibility listings.

Speaking of SAEs, I was doing a head count today and one of them seems to be
AWOL. Hopefully he's just hiding out somewhere.

SAE's sounds great. I was confusing them with the chinese ones I
think. Sounds like I could have those with any of the fish I've been
looking at.

Hope you find your missing fish.

All the best,

Muddy

They pretty much left my pleco alone but then he hid in the rocks during the
day. The Tigers didn't move around much after lights-out. That's when the
pleco made his/her appearance.

I personally wouldn't keep anything with them.

The otos wont eat much of the red and black algae though. The plecos will.

Would a small group of Tiger Barbs (say 6-8) be OK with Leopard Danios.

Anyone got any experience of this?

Yep, I had them both in a 4ft tank.

The danios were ok, kept out of trouble but they were a mismatch,
they got eaten by other things in due course (things that were
big enough to keep tiger barbs at bay) - the barbs were more
interested in killing each other. But then you end up with 1
tiger barb....

Some clown plecs (Peckoltie spp.) are great algae eaters, but others
prefer meaty foods. I find the Ancistrus spp. (bushy nose plecs) to be
somewhat more reliable algae eaters.

I'll second the otos!
