The topis says it all, what other fish swim around with your cichlids? I'd like to get an idea of what are acceptable tank mates. The cichlids I have are still small, nothing longer than 2 inches. I keep 4 giant danios and 1 plec with my Oscar. |

I keep Angelfish (yep..they're Cichlids), with fully grown Neons, a male Betta, several female Bettas, Panda and Pygmy Cories, and African Dwarf Frogs. Oh....Clown loachestoo. |

Subject: What other fish do you have with your cichlids? From: Ryan Minaker Date: 3/21/2004 11:41 AM Central Standard Time Message-id: How do Angle Fish do with Africans? From what I know, Africans can only be mixed with the right type of other Africans. |

![]() "Ryan Minaker" wrote in message ... How do Angle Fish do with Africans? If you mean "Angelfish" the answer is depends, but not something I personally would recommend. Africans thrive in hard alkaline water (assuming we're talking Mbunas and the like) and range from somewhat aggressive to insanely ultraviolent. Angels originally came from soft, acid river water, but can accept a huge range of water conditions. Having said that, African Rift-type water is really at the extreme and they will not thrive. Although they can be aggressive with each other, especially when spawning, they are very, very gentle for cichlids. Based only on second-hand experiences and general knowledge, I wouldn't mix them. Having said that, I'm sure someone will post that they've been doing this for decades. But in this kind of setup, one or the other variety will get the short straw and sub-optimal conditions. -coelacanth |

Cool, thanks for the info. I've recently done a full cleaning of my
100G and I've decided that I'm going to try for a South American Cichlid tank instead of African this time around. So far I've purchased two Oscars. Do you think they would devour Angles also? Any suggestions for South American's that I could mix with my oscars? Thanks! Ryan On Mon, 22 Mar 2004 06:12:44 GMT, "coelacanth" wrote: "Ryan Minaker" wrote in message .. . Just about anything put into the tank with my buttikoferi would be chunks of fish guts within hours. I need to correct this earlier statement of mine. My 4" Buttikoferi has been co-existing well with a 3.5" Leporinus. They both have their territories (The koferi can't fit into the Lep's hiding spots) and they often swim together in the tank with only occasional chases along the lines of, "I think I want to be where you're swimming," movement which has been done by both of them. |
