Default OT changing settings (was more viruses)

I'll be removing mine. I've had over 300 of these things today. It's
brutal!

Haven't had the problem, probably due to the simple fact of my forging my
email address on all newsgroup postings.

I use Outlook Express, and if anybody is interested this is how to change
your email reply address:
In your mail window go to
Tools: Accounts: then click on 'news' tab
Fill in the boxes w/something that is NOT your email addy.

Some people put a fake one under "email address" and the real one under

the
"reply to" address. The theory is that the email address harvesting bots
only harvest the "email address" and not the "reply to" address -- I have

no
idea if this is accurate.

Every NG I post on has threads about this virus thing and people being
bombarded -- I haven't gotten one of these particular virus emails and I'm
sure that's due to my email addy being completely useless.

Some people also just simply put their email addy in a signature like:
suchandsuch (at) somewhere (dot) com - again, in theory the bots don't
recognize that. But you have to remove it in that tools option or your
screwed :-)

I'm for that! At least some punishments that are more of a deterrent than,
"We're going to take your computer away." The problem is that many of these
originate offshore.

Interestingly enough, my server stops most of them. But, they want to let me
know how well they are doing so I get the same amount of spam anyway, saying
they stopped it. Got 40 this morning so I finally got smart enough to filter
the "potentially unsafe" messages.

something that I found out.
I am getting tons of these, my daughter isn't,, & neither is my 'new' yahoo
address.
"I" am using my address for newsgroups,, my daughter does NOT go on
newsgroups, neither does my yahoo address.

I also read from other newsgroups, that this seems to be the trend,, the
virus stuff is being sent to emails harvested to those on
newsgroups.........( well also kazaa etc)

I had 250 bogus emails by 9:30 or so this morning -- along with one from
southeast.rr.com letting me know my "inbox" was too full and would I please
download the messages. I'd say conservatively that by 6:00 pm today (9/19),
I have deleted at least 600 emails. The ones that aren't from Microsoft
(which look like the real thing, except I know that MS doesn't email
patches) are identified by RoadRunner as having the Automat worm.

Gale,

I tried setting Norton Anti-virus to just delete emails from those on the
"blocked senders list" that I had just created, but I got a popup screen
each time NAV did it, yuck!

Try going through the options at NAV until you come to "delete messages
silently" or something like that.

Well, at least this email barrage has accomplished something -- I'm
finally going to get a bigger hard drive installed, so I can download the
*real* security fix from Microsoft's website; I've tried several times, but
I don't have enough space on my hard drive (probably because I was foolish
enough to install Windows XP on an "older" computer).

Norton is catching them all, but I have to sit here and click on

Quarantine
after repair failed...........hmmmm.... - going to see if I can change
settings to either Quarantine with no repair or just plain delete
Gale :~)

actually, it grabs your email from the address book of the
"infected user" who happens to be on the newsgroup!

if you clicked on the file, dont get on the internet until
you get it fixed or it will just keep sending them out.

You're right, but my machine can't get infected so I'm at least not
contributing to the mess.

I looked in my spam filter and I only had 1 with a microsoft subject.
But I had 10 "virus" messages. The problem with being able to control
someone's machine by sending them email has been around for a very long
time on windows and MS still can't seem to figure out how to control it.
So, the next time Bill Gates says "we're giving the customers what they
want" send him your junk email. The virus writers are just taking
advantage of a bad design.

Anyway, best of luck. My mail is working again.

I haven't gotten any mail all day. Now I think I know why. Anyway, I
also use linux and this is one case where having a minority os is a good
deal
