I live in the southern part of the state of Florida [USA], which has a
warm climate, and thus a lot of professional freshwater fish farmers for the aquarium trade,... Folks who live out 'in the sticks', where rent is very cheap, and there are lots of space for several outside ponds, have the advantage of mass,...So I would be raising the fish mostly for the pleasure of raising them, and to trade for fish food, et cetera,...And being on Social Security Disability, as a reason to get out of bed on those really bad days.~Dean. |

![]() "Papa Red" wrote in message ... Just how large and what type was the shark? How many gallons approximately was the tank? Too often I have seen things like that where the lifeform was used as a draw, to get people into the establishment, with little thought to the comforts of the lifeform. I have a real problems with places that do that,...or should I say, they end up having a real problem with me, because I'm one of those legendary hard-core stubborn red-heads, the kind that gets the real 'fire-in-their-eyes' kind of angry when ever I see children or animals in harm's way, because of the ignorance, greed or what ever of certain humans.~Dean. No, it was well taken care of, with much room, they had people who came in and took care of the entire thing, one being a marine biologist, the tank was the size of the long end of the building (his place had 20 pool tables, a dance floor, and a restaurant for dining) big place , I am surprised being you live in Fl you had not heard of it, they were in Time magazine several times in the 80 & 90's, The people who had the fish prior did not have the room and tried to then pass it on to the zoo who at the time were not able to take it, my uncle decided to put it in his establishment and there it lived for several years until a permanent home was built for it. I never followed what happend i was a bit younger when i left florida. I would have to ask him when i talked to him what type of shark and those details..... but it lived quite well during those years. Nik |

Well there is but one way to find out if the filing cabinet can hold that much weight,...And besides, there is a thirty gallon aquarium atop a filing cabinet identical to the one that the fifty gallon storage container in going atop. It looks sturdy enough to handle the weight. But like I said, there is still only one way to be sure.~Dean. ========================== Have a large mop and a bucket handy. :-) -- Koi-Lo.... the ReelMcKoi Frugal ponding since 1995. [addition] Sorry, had forgotten that you have several other small tanks. Personally I would ask in the LFS what kind of fish is trendy, difficult to get and expensive. The most fish are too cheap. In Germany colourful invertebrates like dwarf shrimps and dwarf crayfish are very trendy. A good 1" crystal red shrimp for example costs 5+ Euro in the LFS and a 1.7" couple of Mexican dwarf orange crayfish costs 20-30+ Euro and more. But I really don't know how the invertebrate demand and price situation in the U.S. is. HTH. Very similar. I was thrilled to get 10 cherry red shrimp for $20 in an auction because they're usually $3.99 each at fish store. Another thing that's valuable is Christmas moss. Mosses don't require much light so if you can find some to get started, you can make some cash from them. -- Put the word aquaria in the subject to reply. Did you read the FAQ? http://faq.thekrib.com ------------------------------------------------- Now there's a viable idea for a way for me to make some money. I wonder if there is a market for water hyacinths? The canals here have them growing by the bunches. |

Any suggestions folks?~Dean. A water change, about 50%, take your time, let 'em alone in the shallow water for an hour or so. Then begin refilling with water 2 or 3 or 4 degrees cooler. Run the water slowly, let it splash. And my favorite part, I put on a recording of the 1812 Overture at high volume, floor shaking bass, and turn lights on and off. I'm told that heavy metal music works as well. Some people report banging skillets with spoons. You will have replicated the dry season, and the stormy return of the rainy season - which is a mating call to corydoras. I supposed the Mystic Moods Orchestra Stormy Night album might work, or perhaps Bolero, but I prefer the 1812. This has never failed to send my corys chasing about and hooking up in the classic T position for the rest of the afternoon. I remove the eggs from the aquarium glass with a razor blade, and, with a cup of water never letting the eggs hit the air, I transfer them to a gallon plastic box with a gentle air bubbler, a plain air hose with nothing on it, or I like those rings that send up non fizzy bubbles. Some folks use airstones. I prefer real bubbles. I add MarOxy according to directions, most people add methylene blue until the water is dark but you can still see the eggs. Use a bulb syringe to remove eggs that turn opaque white, they're dead. The little syringes they sell at the drug store to measure baby's medicines work well. If you can't get the bad eggs out without messing up the ones around it, it's OK, the M Blue or MarOxy will prevent a fungal outbreak. Usually. -- Mister Gardener A Google search on Corydoras Spawning will get you lots more ideas. And start thinking about how you're going to feed the babies before they get here. -- Mister Gardener |
