Default 72 Bug wiring question

Hi all, I just got a 72 bug that doesn't run. The guy that owned it before the
person I got it from replaced the starter but for some strange reason he
welded the starter in place. My question is what is the wiring for this? None
of the wires were connected and a buddy of mine hooked them up to what he
thinks is right but when I turn the key I get nothing, no click no turn over.
it has a brand new fully charged battery. Also when I went to hook up the
battery I got small sparks from the negitive side, does this mean anything? I
really don't what to have to grind the welds off the starter if that is not the
problem.
Thank you
Bob

OK. Let's try to get it cranking first.

shows where to jumper the starter under the car.
Make sure the shift is in Neutral and wear glasses!!

If you get it to crank and still doesn't start, look on my web site
for: "Why won't my engine start?"

The small sparks mean *something* is draining current from the
battery. Could be radio, interior light, etc. You can try
removing fuses to narrow it down.
