maybe it's something piggy-backing on emissions that ca requires. but i
think it more likely that modern belt materials are better. plus,
better belt design helps. trapezoidal tooth profiles are more prone to
wear than the more modern rounded ones.

if you just want cheap, get the 88-91 civic sedan. they're about half
the price of the hatchbacks, but you get the same fuel economy and
handling. don't forget to change the o-rings on the throttle body
injectors if you get the d15 motor - they can leak and not only does gas
consumption at idle become a problem, you'll chew through cats like crazy.

the 92-95's are fine, but cheapened up in a number of ways which i don't
care for. [they chew through front suspension bushings quite
impressively for example.] post separately if you want a list of 88-91
things to look out for. and cheapo things you can do to give one a
little more performance sparkle.
