$800 is quaoted price for timing belt replacement for 96 Accord

My local Honda dealer is asking for $800 for replacing timing belt for
my 96 Accord LX 4 cylinder. I am in Indiana and zip code is 47906. I
think it it too high in Indiana.

I bought the car new and it has 65k miles now.

How hard is DIY? Is there any speacial tricks that I need to pay close
attention.

In mid GA, I had the timing belt package -- both belts, water pump and drive
belts done for right around $500.00 on a 98 Accord I4. Sounds like your
local Honda dealer is getting very rich.

t/b jobs arent hard per se, but that are labor intensive. I wouldn't
recommend it to someone who doesn't know what they're doing. But i
WOULD recommend bringing it to a local reputable repair shop, not the
stealership.

let your fingers do the walking - call around for alternative quotes.

go to tegger.com and look for the links. it's not expensive in terms of
parts, but you need to know what you're doing, you need a couple of
special tools, and you /definitely/ need the honda service manual.

I have replaced AC compressor and all four struts myself for my Toyota
Avalon. I change all fluids on my cars myself.

You should be able to do the job yourself then. Removing the crank bolt is
interesting, and don't allow the crankshaft to turn while the belt is off.
Many people replace the water pump at the same time, just because it is
behind the timing belt and therefore difficult to get at. You might as well
change the coolant, valve cover gasket and accessory drive belts too, while
you are at it.

Get a manual though. Haynes or whatever... be sure to get genuine Honda
coolant, and change all of the (front) seals too. That is a little more of
a challenge but it is worth it (crank seal, cam seal, balance shaft seal).
www.cheapesthondaparts.com is a great place to get parts (in my experience).
I've done two accord engines and a Honda Oddy engine ('97). Only book I
have is for the '93 - '96 Accord but the engine is the same. No special
tools, but a good torque wrench is needed.
