Default Didn't expect to spin a bearing...

Hiya,

I started up my 4 cylinder 151 c.i. pontiac Iron Duke engine after
letting the
car sit for a year. It has 71,000 miles on it.

My procedure was to install a freshly charged battery and just let the
engine
keep cranking to lubricate it. The engine cranked
for over a minute before it started up on its own and then disaster
struck.

Some really nasty clanging greeted me almost immediately. I turned it
off and let it sit for five minutes and then tried again. No good
news, just
more banging and racket. I have never experienced such an engine
failure as this. The engine was tight I thought.

Next month I'm going to pull the head off and see if there is debris
caught in the value or something. Any imput on this experience
would be appreciated.

I'd pull the pan down first and look for metal in the pan, it sounds more
like a lower end issue.

Could be a snapped valve spring due to corrosion pitting from the car
sitting a long time. Hopefully the valve hasn't dropped down enough to
contact the piston - if it didn't, it should be an easy fix. Yes, a
broken valve spring will make a hellacious racket. When one went in my
Volvo, the mechanic at first said "thrown rod."
