It IS a trap, you fool them into thinking that they DO have some personal
integrity.
Unfortunately, they believe it and then start to act as if they do.

I got to work on a neighbor's '66 Galaxie Convertible yesterday that
wouldn't start. Looks like the fuel pump went out...

None of the models I've had in recent years has needed one so I don't have a
lot of experience with them...
