If I had such a system I'd likely give up the marginally better
performance of a slightly narrower winter tire and get all tires the
same size.

The difference between the snow tire size and the summer tire size is
tiny compared to the size difference of a summer tire and the mini
spare.

I stopped using snows years ago. It doesn't make any difference really.
It's just marketing.

*facepalm*

for anyone that was thinking of taking Speedy at face value, don't.

nate

(I know it's a troll, but this post is actual dangerous advice.)

Thanks for all the useful replies. Looks like it will be 4 tires.

Indeed, the manual for my Camaro states 45 mph max if the spare is
mounted on the rear axle. Supposedly the diff can overheat, and the wear
on the LSD is probably increased too.

When I had a flat it took about a day before I moved the spare up front.
While it's rated for 50 mph freeway speeds weren't a problem, but just
to be safe I increased the tire pressure a bit over the recommended.

Did the same on my BMW a few winters ago. Having a spare tire with
minimal tread on the back makes the remaining three studded tires next
to useless without a LSD. Couldn't even get out of the driveway...
