Transmission limp mode
Hi,
My 89 dynasty has started going into limp mode. After researching this in other groups, the general consenses is the input or output speed sensor. I have replaced both of these and it did not change anything. Before it goes into limp mode, I noticed the other day what sounds like a small "buzz" the instant before it goes into limp mode. It is very faint and hard hear. While it is in normal mode, it shifts normally and has no signs of anything mechanical failing inside. Also, turning the car off and back on temporarily fixes the problem. Is there a way to get the control module codes? I tried using the process of turning the key back and forth and only the code that I get is 55, so that did not tell me anything. Does anyone else have any ideas on what to try next? Thanks. |

sounds like you need the transmission codes. Something there is telling the
computer to limp. "rkm" > wrote in message ... > Hi, > My 89 dynasty has started going into limp mode. To pull the TCM codes you need a scanner and adapter that hooks into the Chrysler CCD Bus plug. You're probably going to have to have the dealer or a tranny shop do this. The stored codes will tell you why it's going into Limp-In mode. It could be something as simple as a bad connection in the transmission harness, or a serious internal problem. |

While your at it pull the trans too because it needs to be rebuilt. Sorry, but that is the sad reality of those older 604 transmissions. |

(flameon) Every pinhead pretend to be a mechanic just says the tranny is junk. (flame off) With the symptoms you describe I'd bet it is an electrical problem - sensor, PRNDL switch, computer, cel/pack, or even a bad wire or connection. Think about it, if it was a mechanical thing why would restarting the engine correct the problem? Kind of like rebooting your locked up computer, eh? The other thing that kills these units is people who always put in the wrong fluid saying oh, "this is the same thing" or "this replaces that fluid." Unfortunately it is easier for someone to say that your transmission is toast rather than to take the time to find the problem. If you can refer to older posts on this issue - esp. one titled "93 Caravan Transmisson drops out - electrical". As far as the scanner goes - my experience has been that after you pay the $100 at the dealer to have them check the codes, they still tell you that you need a new transmission - after you spend another $500-$1500 changing out the same parts I just listed above! Get the part# of your computer, go to the boneyard and find one with the same exact number. Put it in your car and see if it resolves the specific issue. If it does, go buy a new one and put it in lest you'll then be troubleshooting other intermittent issues in the near future. |

Sure, go ahead. spend good money after bad. the 3/4 clutch pack is probably burnt up. <sarcastic voice on> I ain't never seen that before </voice off> There is a ton of truth to the fact that the wrong fluid was no doubt placed in the transmission also. I have the same trans in a 93 that is still going strong. BECAUSE I TAKE CARE OF IT! I put ATF+3 and +4 in it and service it properly. Those transmissions will hold up if just maintain them. The quick lube joints are a boon to me. Only because they hire people who think they will go blind if they actually read a service or owners manual. |
