Default 97 jetta overheating

i have a 97 jetta overheating. I’ve replaced the themostat but the
temp when standing still gets to 230...is that norm?

It could be many things. First would be to check to see if it is really
getting that hot or if it is a measurement error. The sensor or gauge could
be bad.
