Default high revs and irregular

2000 156 2l selespeed. when car stationary revs go up to 2000/2500 and only
come down when i apply the throttle. When slowing down eg coming on to
driveway revs shhot up to 2000/2500 while it thinks about changing gear
(manual or city). drives poorly too, runs away and irruglar revs. feel the
car slowing and revving even at speeds of over 30mph. cleaned the throttle
butterfly, changed air flow meter, even worse with it off! and ideas
please. thanks.

You really need to get this checked on a diagnostic system. The
selespeed has a fly-by-wire throttle (ie no cable) and if you manually
open the butterfly, you can upset, or even break, the idle actuator on
the side.

You could try resetting the throttle: you do this by turning on the
ignition for 90 secs, then turn it off for 90 secs, then start car
WITHOUT touching the accelerator and leave to idle for around 5 mins.
Stop and restart and take for a run. You might need to repeat this a
few times. If that doesn't work, then getting the idle actuator reset
electronically might work. There are a couple of other forums that I
subscribe to when this is a common problem and there are lots of
suggestions to try and fix it: look at alfaownerDOMcom and
alfa156DOTnet ....
