Default 1987 Chevy 350 TBI from Silverado

this engine has 91K miles on it and drinks oil like crazy! I just
can't figure it out. I have 26-29 lbs on the compression test. I have
replaced the valve seals. it is not dripping..... any ideas?

Regards,
Wit

26-29lbs of compression in each cylinder?! Are You *SURE* you tested
them correctly? That is incredibly low. An old trick is to try a few
squirts of oil into the cylinder before compression testing. If the
reading goes up, your rings are worn. If it doesn't, it is something
above such as valves, headgasket, ect.

However, if your compression is only at 26-29lbs, something is very
wrong. My guess is that (with such low compression) the rings are nearly
gone and oil is burning in the cylinders. Is blue/black smoke visible
out to tailpipes? Does it overheat? Do you loose coolant, too?

I check with the local chevy dealership and they said anything greater
than 23 was ok. I do see black and blue smoke and I know I am burning
the oil. I tested the compression myself so I am pretty confident in
the #. Not overheating or loosing coolant. Just rotating through plugs
and oil.

ANy other thoughts?

Wierd.. I must be thinking of something different, as I recall you need
at least 60psi in each cylinder to run. My ol 76 Aspen had between
140-150psi in each cylinder.

What wt oil are you running?
