Default repair manuals

Good to see that this group still exist. I joined it originally as
Duk64 back when I bought my 94 back in the days of Dr.Bob, traded that
for a 98 and really haven't had too many problems with it until now.

I've got an intermittent starting problem and I need to get a quality
repair manual to start troubleshooting. I've got a haynes #36024 fored
explorer 1991 thru 2001 and a Chilton #26688 Ranger/explorer/
mountaineer 1991 - 99.

Both seem to generic to really do any in depth troubleshooting (and
are a lot less that what I'm used to with my Bentley manuals for my
VW's)

Can anyone reccommend a quality manual to get. At over 125K miles its
time to fork over the $$ for a good manual.

Thanks

Steve

You can go here and "rent" the actual Ford service manual online for
72 hours, 1 month, or 1 year.

Other than Chilton's and Hayne's which seem to be pretty good most of the
time I bought a couple of manuals on CD on eBay for around $10 each. They
are actual Ford manuals and have detailed information on such things and
transfer cases and transmissions. I don't know about the other stuff as I
have not really had any other problems that required further searching.

I thought the hard part was navigating the CD and finding the right info.
For example there was little information if I clicked on the specific
transmission but lots of info if I just clicked on "Transmission." I have a
suspected problem with the Control Trac on my '97 and couldn't really find
anything to diagnose the problem but for $10 or so I figure sooner or later
you will get your money's worth.

One thing I noticed was that the manual is meant for Ford dealers and often
indicates which piece of specialized diagnostic equipment to use that we
don't have.

Hey Steve-

I still stick my nose in now and again just to make sure all is well.

Sold my '92 with about 200k on it to a guy who really needed it for
his family. Stck driving the old Porsche as my daily driver these
days, but put more miles on rental cars doing consulting now than on
my own car, so it's not too bad.

Cheers!

dr bob

Hey Dr.

Glad to see you are still around. my 98 has about 130K on it (and
survived my 16 yr old learning to drive on it). I've got a company car
now so when I'm working on the explorer I don't have to have it ready
to drive to work the next day. So I'm giving it a good going over to
get it ready for snow season up here in Chi town.

Thanks for all the help over the years

Steve
