Default auto insurance questions

I have a situation. My bike was run over by a motorist who was
driving on a bike only path, he almost ran me over too but i ditched
the bike and hopped over the barrier/divider. The Police are
reluctant to do anything about this because there were no witnesses.
I would like to know how someone would go about aquiring someones
insurance carrier info, I have the guys license plate number, name
and address. Is this something that insurance would cover? any help
would be appreciated.
