Pontiac GTO

I don't own a Pontiac GTO.But,many years ago,I read in an auto magazine
GTO means (not sure if I spelled the last name,O right) Grand Turismo
Olimagarto.
I was looking around on the internet,but I couldn't find any information
(maybe I didn't look around enough?) as regards Auto GTOs.Can someone
elucidate on that?

Ford dealers used to say it means Garbage Truck Option.

Its "Omologato," and means "homologation." GTO nominally means a grand
touring car, produced in sufficient quantity to "homologate" it (make
it legal for racing series that require a minimum production volume.)

Interestingly, in the case of the Pontiac GTO it was just a name since
the car sold so many copies that homologation was never an issue. The
Dodge Charger 500, Dodge Daytona, Mercury Cyclone Spoiler, and Plymouth
Superbird, on the other hand, were true homologation vehicles that had
to be sold in order to campaign the cars in NASCAR.

Once I got the spelling right,I went to devilfinder.com and I typed,Gran
Turismo Omologato

Have to watch out for some of those foreign words,they will throw you.
