Default What decent car for $6k US?

A friend of mine will be returning from Baghdad in the near future.
He will be living off base and will need a car.
He has about $6k US to spend.
Any suggestions?

I've ruled out:
GM 6 cyl 60 degree
Ford 6 cyl
Ford axod
Euro cars
Third world cars
Honda and Toyota seem overpriced for their value

Any reason GM's V6's are out?

92-93 Accords seem to be a good value, they hold up well and are nice
cars. A good one will set you back maybe $3000-$4000 so you could spend
the other $2k on tires and stuff.

Thank you for the reply. Hondas seem ok, also Mazda.
A 92/93 is probably close to the end of it's life unless we can find
a low mileage one. The cost of a Honda may rule it out, also.

=46rom what I have read, GM 60 engines ALL have intake manifold water =

leaks starting around 35k miles. Some worse than others. If not fixed
in time, the bearings get wiped.

It depends on what sort of car he wants, too. If he wants something
fairly big and powerful, any GM model with the 3.8 (that's a 90-degree
V6 and one of the most rugged you can get today) in good condition
with a good history will do nicely.

Hondas and Toyotas are frequently overpriced used, you're right, but
if you shop carefully you might get lucky. Mazdas are often a better
value used and nearly as rugged.

Completely depends on where you're located. The selection of excellent
used cars is much larger and less expensive in Denver Metro than in
Detroit Metro, for instance.

I won't argue with any of the above.

If you are able to find one that was well maintained, it will last a lot
longer. We have a 93 with 125k miles, and its given us absolutely no
trouble over its entire life.

you can pick up a nice toyo/lex for $6G and it'll
last for at least 150k after you get it.

i bought an 89 camry for $500 with 140k on it.
sold it 3 years later for $500 with 280k on it.
