1993 Cougar transmission slipping
My 1993 Cougar is slipping while the transmission is in the (OD) selection. Any
clues on how bad this is? |

Nope, he said it was a 3.8L, which is a V6. > These transmissions are sensitive to fluid quality and > contamination. These transmissions are sensitive to how hard you sneeze. The 4.6 and electronically controlled transmission didn't come along until
the 1994 model year. He's got the non-electronic automatic overdrive tranny and either the 3.8 V-6 or the 5.0 V-8. Same basic tranny except the V-8 version has more clutch plates. I'll agree with starting with a COMPLETE tranny fluid flush and filter change. After that, it's off the the transmission shop. I don't know how much they changed since my 87 with the 5.0 but a little plastic grommet on the throttle linkage broke allowing the cable that goes to the tranny to be loose. It was still connected but with the grommet missing, the cable didn't move until the throttle was slightly open. Tranny didn't like the situation at all. I thought it was going out also but replace the grommet and drove another 50K miles or so. Good luck bb |

Still running strong at 212k miles. Stan K. |
