LIMIT is an UPPER BOUND. Maybe you should learn the meaning of words.

Oh, btw, around here, average driver does 70-78mph in a 55mph zone on the
local interstates.

Do you really think speed limits should be set based on the way the
contributors to this group drive? I'm thankful they're not.

The regulars that know something about driving and traffic because
they've tought themselves and researched things on their own, the ones
that have an interest in real safety, real curtsey, etc and so forth?
YES.

But you are another believer in dumbing things down, creating better
idiots, demanding everyone else yield to the morons, the more aggressive,
etc and so forth. A believer in the standard speed kills nonsense that
everyone should always be driving so slow as to be able to compensate for
any degree of idiotcy from another driver. That the driver making the
idiotic move isn't at fault, it's the guy who wasn't able to avoid the
moron. But like all speed kills true believers, it escapes your grasp
that the only safe speed under those conditions is ZERO, and never
leaving one's own garage. Well actually, the moron could slide off the
road and crash into the garage...

You promote compensating for idiotcy instead of competence. And thusly
make driving ever worse because that permotes idiotcy. Been doing it that
way for decades and it's time that we changed and demanded competence.

Tuned for average drivers in average vehicles.

Therefore an above average driver in an above average vehicle can drive
an above average speed.

Speed limits are tuned for the _average_ driver in the _average_
vehicle.
Just because you think YOU have the catlike reflexes and the ultimate
driving machine to handle speeds well above the posted limit, that
doesn't
mean you are issued an exemption. There's only one speed limit posted.

The criminals here at RAD don't buy that. They're all for obeying the
law - until they get behind the wheel, then think they shoudl drive
whatever speed they want

This is an excellent point. Either drivers can determine a proper speed
or they can't. There is no inbetween here. There is no magic number below
which they have judgement and above which they don't.

Since we believe that drivers should be capable of determining a proper
speed, speed limits serve no purpose other than as a revenue tool. Other
signage exists to warn drivers of hidden dangers or to suggest speeds.
