View Full Version : skimmer/filter combo's

I have been doing fw for many years, and came across another tank, and
thought, "what the heck?" I've been wanting to do a marine tank for a while,
and I've decided. It's not large, (10 deep, 16 high, 36 long) about 25 gal,
so I'd like to do just a little live rock, perhaps a shrimp and a couple
small fishes. Being a noob, I'm not going near inverts, obviously.
My question is this; being a not-so-large-tank, I'd like to minimize the
"crap hangin' off the tank" and I saw in my Foster and Smith cataloge a
"skilter", combination filter/skimmer.

Has anyone used these, and are they efficient enough at both tasks to make
sense. If not, I have no problem setting up a traditional skimmer.

TIA

Don't bother with filters especially if you are using live rock.. live rock
is the best *filter*. I have kept freshwater for over 30 years.. the only
thing the same with marine is the cycling process. Nothing else. Filter pads
are nitrate factories and that isn't good in a marine tank. I have a hang on
back filter i use for water circulaiton without the filter pad in. Once in a
great while I put the pad in when I am working in the tank and let it suck
up things that get stirred up but I take it back out after a couple hours
and clean it out. A few internal pumps to move water around, a skimmer, and
a marine safe heater. Use the live rock to cycle.. don't put fish through
that process. If you do, don't tell anyone here about it... it's generally
frowned upon as needlessly cruel to the fish. Read alot here, go back
through notes and you will find others asking the same things you will want
to know.

That is something written by a guy on the reef group.. it's a great place to
start and help you figure out what you might need to do.

It's a piece of ****.......I had one, it's loud and skims worse than
a seaclone. At least the seaclone is quiet............

I have one of these skilters, and yes they are very noisy imo. not even
six months old and its had to be fixed twice.... not really worth the
money you'll be parting with if you get one!
