Default skimmer/filter combo's

I have been doing fw for many years, and came across another tank, and
thought, "what the heck?" I've been wanting to do a marine tank for a while,
and I've decided. It's not large, (10 deep, 16 high, 36 long) about 25 gal,
so I'd like to do just a little live rock, perhaps a shrimp and a couple
small fishes. Being a noob, I'm not going near inverts, obviously.
My question is this; being a not-so-large-tank, I'd like to minimize the
"crap hangin' off the tank" and I saw in my Foster and Smith cataloge a
"skilter", combination filter/skimmer.

Has anyone used these, and are they efficient enough at both tasks to make
sense. If not, I have no problem setting up a traditional skimmer.

TIA

billy
